Indianapolis disposal costs

What South Side Landfill charges, and what that means for a dumpster

South Side Landfill on Kentucky Avenue prices cash loads by volume, not weight. Its posted rates give a floor for what disposal costs in Indianapolis.

Posted cash rates

RateMaterial
$21.00Car load
$25.50Per cubic yard, open-top solid waste
$26.50Per cubic yard, compacted solid waste
$25.50Per cubic yard, construction debris and drywall
$28.00Per cubic yard, shingles
$13.00Per cubic yard, clean fill
$16 to $200Per tire, by size
$157.50Appliance that holds Freon
$73.50Appliance without Freon

SUVs and vans are charged like a pickup of similar size. Pickup trucks have their own chart on the landfill's site. Flatbeds, dump beds and box trucks are measured and charged by the cubic yard.

On top of the posted rate

  • Fuel surcharge: a percentage of the bill, reset monthly from the U.S. average price of No. 2 diesel. The landfill says it has typically run from 5% to about 10%. Call 317-247-6808 for this month's figure.
  • State fee: $0.60 per ton on all solid waste.
  • Mixed loads: charged at the most restrictive material in the load. Concrete mixed into garage junk is billed as solid waste, not clean fill.

Worked examples (our arithmetic, not a quote)

Gate costLoad
$25510 cubic yards of mixed cleanout trash at $25.50
$51020 cubic yards of remodel debris and drywall at $25.50
$56020 cubic yards of shingles at $28.00
$13010 cubic yards of clean fill (dirt, broken concrete, nothing else) at $13.00

Each example is before the fuel surcharge and the state fee. A hauler with an account may pay a different rate, and the rental price also covers the truck, the driver and the box. Still, if a quote for a full 20-yard box of shingles lands below the gate cost above, ask what weight or volume limit sits behind it.

Bringing a load yourself

Follow the signs off Kentucky Avenue, go down the hill and stop at the booths, where the attendant checks the load and takes payment. Brush, construction debris and household waste go to the cash unloading area. Dirt and clean fill go to a separate area. For one carload of junk on a Saturday, the Citizens' Transfer Station at $2 is cheaper.
